Benefits of Phytomining
Nickel can be extracted from the nickel-rich biomass of the plants and then used in industrial applications. According to WUR researcher Antony van der Ent, “Using plants to extract nickel from the soil avoids the severe environmental damage caused by open-pit mining. Additionally, converting bio-mineral to metallic nickel emits significantly less carbon dioxide.” This approach represents an opportunity to advance towards a more sustainable economy.
Genetic Analysis for Improved Nickel Accumulation
The project also includes analyzing the DNA of the plants to identify genes responsible for nickel absorption and storage, as well as those influencing growth and biomass production. This knowledge will enable the development of improved plant varieties with higher nickel accumulation and biomass yield, optimizing the amount of metal extracted.
Future Prospects
Another key aspect of the study is the potential to delay the flowering of these plants. This genetic adjustment would allow the plants to allocate more energy to tissue growth, increasing the nickel content in their biomass. Researchers emphasize that phytomining has the potential to become a completely new and sustainable approach to extracting critical metals for industry.

This ambitious project involves scientists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Illinois State University, as well as the French company Botanickel, which specializes in sustainable nickel production through phytomining.
